What is Circular Chess?

Circular Chess is a “Chess variant”. It uses standard Chess pieces but is played on a circular board. The familiar pieces and movement rules of traditional Chess and the unique board design of Circular Chess combine to create a game that adds a new twist to the usual Chess strategy.

Unlike many other Chess variants, Circular Chess does not expand movement possibilities so much that beginning and intermediate players are overwhelmed. Standard openings and familiar game situations are not altered beyond recognition. Instead, modified geometry and a handful of additional spaces allow Circular Chess to merely add some new wrinkles to the old traditional Chess problems.

For those Chess variant enthusiasts who are acquainted with the version of Circular Chess played in Great Britain (a modern version of Byzantine Chess), this board and game is significantly different. The initial setup of pieces is virtually the same as traditional Chess. Piece positions are comfortably familiar and play occurs across the board’s center as opposed to being limited to moving around the perimeter in “racetrack” fashion. Conflict occurs on only one front, as in standard Chess, rather than on two fronts as in the Byzantine style of Circular Chess. No rules of traditional Chess are excluded from this version of Circular Chess. Castling and capturing “en passant” rules are still in effect.

The Rules

For a more detailed description of the game, check out the Rules page. You will find that the rules for Circular Chess are virtually the same as traditional Chess. Detailed descriptions of all piece and Pawn movements are included to help you learn to see them on the Circular Chess board.
